8.5.1 Resonance

Question:

What must the frequency of the periodic driving force be in order to achieve resonance?

Answer:

The frequency at which resonance occurs is called the resonant frequency of the oscillation.

In theory, the resonant frequency is always lower than the natural frequency of the system. How much lower depends on the degree of damping. The heavier the damping, the more the resonant frequency is lowered from the natural frequency.

In practice however, we are usually concerned with resonance only when the damping is very very light. And when the damping is very light, the resonant frequency is practically equal to the natural frequency.
